Avignon OFF 2022

Class childhoods

at Espace Saint Martial

with Le Suricate Magazine

According to Bernard Lahire staging of Isabelle Bonillo, with Isabelle Bonillo, Catia Machado and Nicolas Ruegg. A l’Saint-Martial area a 9:55 a.m. from July 7 to 30 (no class on July 10, 17 and 24).

Before being entertainment, Class Childhood is a sociological study directed by Bernard Lahire which was published in 2019. In this study, the subject of social inequality is eliminated, not with abstract discourses that are difficult to understand, but through the sequence of sociological portraits and more theoretical analyses. It is this popularization that has undoubtedly given the T-âtre I Bonillo, a company specializing in itinerant theatre, to highlight these inequalities in their own way.

In addition to the splendid place in which the performance takes place, the spectator finds himself directly in the bath. The actors themselves welcome us and chat with us while waiting for the start of the performance, but always in the tone of the play. On stage, three boxes and an easel overhung by a blackboard, decor in line with the outfits attributed to our actors, who bring us back to school. From one part to another, pleasant music including a charming accordion playing punctuates the scenes, each part has its own melodies. The transitions are fluid and the freshly musical and almost childish staging is in perfect harmony with the text presented to us, and with a lightness that will make us smile.

CRATES AND CARDS

The play unfolds in three parts in a game where the fourth wall no longer really exists. We’re not at a conference, but we’re not quite at the theater either. Indeed, the stories of three children from three different social classes are both told and at the same time played by our three fabulous actors who manage to chain the roles with unfailing energy. And these three stories, those of these three children, reach the viewer: we want the sequel. From this young child who lives with his family in his car to this young boy from the countryside, passing by the latter who lives in a wealthy environment, we manage to imagine their life and the conditions in which they live. But despite the heavy theme, through the acting and the staging of Isabelle Bonillo, the viewer is never separated from her smile for very long.

Class Childhood is a funny and energetic piece that will make both children and adults aware of social inequality. Do not hesitate any longer and take your places, and take the opportunity to discover the magnificent decor of the Espace Saint Martial!
